Every lawn seems to have dead zones. We?re talking about those areas in which grass just doesn?t seem willing to grow. While everything else is lush and green, your brown dead zones stand out as eyesores.
Here?s the interesting part about it. Even though they?re hated and extremely common, they?re not that hard to fix. You can get rid of your dead spots easily with a three-step plan.
First, loosen up the soil in the area. The grass isn?t going to root itself properly in hard earth. Just take a rake and bust it up a bit. Get it loose,
Second, seed the area. Use the right seed, too. You don?t want to just dump any old grass seed in the mix. You want to match the rest of your yard as carefully as you can, but you should try to use a special formulation of the seed designed for extra water absorbency. Once your seeds are in place, cover them with some high-quality potting soil.
Third, water them regularly. You want to keep those seeds moist to encourage germination and root growth.
After that, there?s very little to do. The grass will grow and eventually, it will cover that dead zone with the same gorgeous green featured throughout the rest of your lawn.

Sometimes we mentally separate the lawn from the rest o four home. That?s why the idea of doing something outdoors to the surrounding landscape doesn?t seem like ?home improvement? to some people. It should.
lawn improvement is home improvement.
First, remember that your lawn is an extension of your home. If you?re like most people, you enjoy time outside and it?s hard to have a pleasant experience when your property is ill-maintained.
Second, a quality lawn will increase the value of your home if you ever put it on the market. A great home will bring far less in a sale if its surrounded by a poor lawn.
A good lawn, then, can simultaneously improve the quality of your life while maximizing the value of your property. Isn?t that what home improvement is really all about?
If you?ve only been thinking of home improvement in terms of what you can do between the walls, expand your horizons. Look out the window and you?ll encounter a bevy of possibilities.

If there?s one thing worse than never starting a home improvement project, it?s starting something and leaving it half done. There are few things more annoying than a room that?s perpetually ?under construction? or a yard that ?isn?t quite there yet? for two summers.
In many cases, those half-completed projects stalled because the homeowner encountered a budgetary crunch. They just didn?t have the dough necessary to see the project through to fruition. That?s why it?s extremely important to crunch your financial numbers before you start any home improvement project.
Budgeting for a project really isn?t that tough if you do your homework. If it?s a do it yourself proposition, you really just need to worry about the price of supplies and materials. If you?re hiring a contractor, you should assume some level of cost overrun in excess of the estimate in order to protect yourself.
It?s exciting to ?jump right in? when you have a home improvement idea, but the best course of action requires attention to detail and advanced planning. Part of that planning should involve the project budget. Make sure you can afford to get the job done.

Are you considering changing your garage door or installing a new garage door opener as part of your home improvement plan? If so, you need to take extra care for your safety. Garage door work can be very dangerous.
It?s not much the risk of getting crushed under a big ol? door. That doesn?t happen that often. What does happen, however, is that people sustain serious injuries due to the garage door springs. Those big springs make it easier to open and to close those big heavy doors, but they?re dangerous when handled incorrectly.
Imagine a rocket-propelled chunk of metal. Now, imagine standing directly in front of it. Over a cement floor. On a ladder.
People have been killed when those springs are ?sprung?. Broken bones, lacerations and serious injuries abound. If you?re going to be working on a garage door in any way, make sure you?re handling them correctly.
And if your job directly involves garage door springs, bring in a garage door professional to help with the job. There?s no reason to expose yourself to any unnecessary risk.

If you take a look at the most popular ?large? home improvement projects, kitchen remodels invariably find their way to the top of list. Why are so many people interested in transforming their kitchen spaces? Here are a few reasons.
First, the kitchen is often the hub of a home?s activity. Everyone spends time there and many people eat at kitchen tables instead of in dining rooms. When you spend a lot of quality time in one place, you?d like it to be in a quality place.
Second, it?s one of the best ?bang for your buck? renovations. While other home improvement project may only increase the value of a home nominally relative to the cost of the project, kitchen remodels are often ?worth? much, much more than they cost.
Third, the kitchen is evolving. New technology and appliances are constantly entering the marketplace, creating a strong pull for adjusting the space to accommodate them.
When you think about it, it?s not that surprising that so many people opt to remodel their kitchens. There are some very strong underlying motivations at play.

You love flamingos. You have a collection of flamingo figurines. You have framed prints of the pink birds. You read about them. Everyone who knows you thinks of you as ?the flamingo guy?.
That?s a strange eccentricity, but you aren?t really doing any damage. Full speed ahead!
Until it comes to improving your home, anyway. When you?re contemplating renovations, changes or additions to your property it?s time to be someone other than ?the flamingo guy?.
You might think a series of hot pink stepping stones to the back door is a great idea. You might think that flamingo-shaped pool in the backyard would be nothing short of awesome. At some point, however, you might decide to move. You might be forced to sell the home. Future buyers won?t care about the flamingo photos on the walls, but they won?t care for the pink carpet or that swimming pool. And you can bet they?ll calculate the cost of removing those stones when they make an offer.
Personal expression is wonderful, but when it comes to home improvement you should balance that objective with creating a space that will have a more generalized appeal. Most people don?t stay in the same home for their entire lives and it is important to protect, if not to maximize, the value of your property.
That?s not going to happen when you put up pink aluminum siding.

There are times when a home improvement project isn?t really much of an improvement at all. When that?s the case, you?re better off not taking the plunge.
We?re not talking about the obvious winners here. If you need a new heating system and can improve your home by adding a new one that uses a fraction of the energy the old one used and that will increase your comfort level, get the job done.
We?re talking about the more aesthetically- and design-oriented changes. There are times when a remodel or renovation may increase the value of your home while not improving the quality of your life.
Those crazy stairs to the attic with the low ceiling may not be a feature that others would want in a home. You might be able to make the house worth more by ripping them out and replacing them with something a little more ?normal?. But if you love those stairs and revel in their uniqueness, don?t feel compelled to call a contractor.
Sometimes, the very idiosyncrasies that people might eliminate in the name of home improvement are what makes the space special to us. They may be imbued with memories or serve as a stamp of individuality. In those cases, though, undertaking a home improvement project may not result in a meaningful improvement.
After all, it?s your home. The best improvements are those that improve the quality of your life.

Most people don?t bother moving to a new air conditioner unit until they?re sweating profusely and getting an ugly assessment from the repair person.
That?s the wrong way to do it. You really should make a move earlier than that. If you wait until your air conditioner breaks down completely, you?ve waited far too long. Why? While it was getting the job done, it was undoubtedly working way too hard to do so. What used to take X units of power to accomplish back when the system was strong may have been taking 5X units of power at the end.
The best way to handle A/C units is to make the switch as the system starts to decay and decline. If you have an air conditioner that?s more than ten years old, you need to have someone look at it right away, even if its still pumping cold air like crazy. Have them assess the base efficiency of the unit and its likely level of degradation. If you don?t get a good report, make a change.
Even if you do get a solid assessment, prepare yourself for a new air conditioner. In most cases, units that are more than ten years old are living on borrowed time. And their sucking power as they degrade.

We all know the expression, ?Cash is king?. Here?s an exception to the rule. If you?re hiring a contractor to help you with a home improvement project and they?re only interested in accepting a cash payment, you need to look for someone else to handle the job.
Many of the contractors who operate on the fringes or outside of the law have a tendency to deal in cash. In fact, the Federal Trade Commission argues that an insistence on cash payment is a warning sign that you may be dealing with a scammer.
Besides, you?re better off paying with a check or via credit card. That way, you have a paper trail evidencing the money you spent on the job just in case any problems–or lawsuits–happen to arise.
Cash isn?t always king.

You?ll hear people talking about home improvement as an investment strategy. They?ll tell you that you can increase the value of your home dramatically by making smart changes. They?ll discuss home improvement in terms of the potential gain you may realize upon the sale of the property. They?ll remind you that certain adjustments will save you money or time by reducing monthly bills.
And they?ll be right.
Home improvement is a good investment technique that adds real value to your most expensive asset.
But that isn?t the best reason to improve your home.
The best reason to tackle a home improvement project is the fact that you live there. You want to enjoy your life and to feel wholly comfortable and satisfied in your surroundings. That?s the best reason to make a change. Home improvement isn?t just about improving your home. It?s about enhancing your quality of life.
Feel free to think about renovations in terms of their long-range value. Don?t overlook the financial repercussions of the projects you might consider. But while you?re crunching those numbers, keep the most important thing in mind–what it will mean for your life and the lives of others living in the home.

Home improvement. Look at the second word for a moment. Improvement. Making things better.
If you?re home improvement project produces something unattractive, it?s hard to say that you really made anything substantially better, right? You need to avoid ugly home improvement efforts if you want to really maximize the value of your property and your quality of life.
How do stay on the right side of aesthetics? If you have a good eye, you?ll probably be fine. The problem is that the folks who have the worst instincts in this regard often have the worst taste. So, just to be safe, you?ll want to grab a few second and third opinions by people who aren?t afraid to tell you the truth.
Alternatively, you can follow an established plan. In most cases, the common blueprints an design schemes for common home improvement projects are, at the very least, visually acceptable. In many cases, they can be downright gorgeous.
If you?re serious about getting things done right, you might want to consider dealing with an expert designer. They can provide you with the insight and expertise necessary to create extremely attractive changes.
No matter what you do, do something. It?s not real home improvement if it?s unattractive.
